Almost everyone goes to this restaurant for the Indonesian curry prawn (RM15). Other than that, we also ordered 3-cup chicken (RM8), the signature bean curd (RM8), fried mix vegetables (RM7) and steamed red snapper – Thai style (RM35). The Sire Museum Restaurant

This restaurant cum museum is the former home of the late Yeap Chor Ee, a prominent businessman and philanthropist in Penang. In 2008, the place was converted into a gallery by his grandson displaying antiques from the owner’s collection.

The interior of the restaurant itself is something to be marvel. Entering the restaurant is like going through a time portal that brings you back to history. The front portion of the building is where you can enjoy your meal while the gallery located at the back. The ambiance is very relaxing with dim lighting and soft French music playing at the background which feels like fine dining but comfortable enough to be casual.

The menu features exquisite western and eastern cuisines with a price to match. Imported beer is priced at RM17.80 a can. The main courses we ordered were Teriyaki Salmon (RM40.80) and Poached Caramelized Snapper (RM29.80). As for the dessert, we had Tiramisu (RM15.80) and Creme Brulee (RM16.80). Complimentary garlic breads were given before the meal.

Lunch is from 11.30am to 3pm and dinner is from 6pm to 10.30pm. It opens daily except Sunday.

Tucked away on top of Penang Hill lies a distant rumour of a long forgotten garden – David Brown’s at Strawberry Hill, a quintessential British colonial Restaurant and Tea Terraces.

Amidst the lush greenery, this ‘hill upon a hill’ restaurant standing on Strawberry Hill provides the perfect setting for meaningful memories – whether it is wedding, lifestyle parties or just chilling out with the loved ones and friends.

David Brown’s allows a view of almost every significant landmark in the island. The well-manicured garden with iconic lily pond sets the scene for al fresco dinning for 50 guests or more.

The restaurant itself is impeccably furnished with comfortable old world furnishing of a past elegance and can accommodate 40 guests.

In all, this British-styled restaurant provides authentic heritage ambience with fine British cooking and a selection of Penang Specialties.

There us a variety if hors d’oeuvers, steaks and chops, fresh puddings & pies and traditional roasts in the menu, which also offer a vegetarian selection.

It is believed that Captain Francis Light originally levelled the slope of this hill expressedly for the planting of strawberries.

Visitors disembarking at the upper station of Penang Hill’s funicular railway can see the entrance to David Brown’s on Strawberry Hill along the road just minutes’ walk away from the station.

The restaurant is open 9am to 9pm everyday. The management can arrange for later departure from the top station if request is made in advance as well as make available 4-wheel drive transportation from the Botanical Garden to the top and down.

Located along the old world charm of Armenian Street is a Chinese restaurant that serves a combination of Hainanese and Nyonya delicacies. The interior of the restaurant is tastefully decorated to maintain the nostalgic feel of 19th century. Like most pre-ware shop houses built during the period, it has an air well in the middle of the restaurant providing natural lighting and proper ventilation throughout the place without the need of air-con. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing.

As for the food, we ordered…

Hainanese Seafood Spring Roll – RM6
Duck stew with purple yams – RM18
Steam rice in coconut – RM1.50
Baked cheese crab – RM7.50/pc
Mushroom soup – RM4.50
Fruit juice – RM3.50
Coffee milk – RM2.50

Hidden from the main road is a well known seafood restaurant own by Paramount Hotel. However weird it may seems, I always prefer having seafood beside the sea because it gives me the sense of freshness no where else can offer. The restaurant not only offer a great view of the sea but also seafood at reasonable price.

My favorite dish at the restaurant is cheese baked crab (RM6 a piece). Other than that, I kind of like their fried bean curd with sushi type seaweeds (RM8). As far as I can recall, this is the first time I tried that dish. However, I found out that their fried mantis prawn in duck egg yolk is only average. It cost a bit more than one of the seafood restaurant in Butterworth (will review it soon). The cost is RM10 per 100 gram. One mantis prawn is around 300 gram. I ordered fried noodle (RM6) as a stomach filler.

Old Town Kitchen Hokkien Mee

Locating not far from the Kim Seng Restaurant Koay Teow Soup is another coffee shop competing for the appetite of the breakfast-goers. The specialties of this coffee shop is Hokkien Mee; one of my favorite hawker fare and they have been selling it since my parents’ time. You can bet nothing can go wrong with a dish that sold for so long. Each time I visited the coffee shop, I ordered dry version of the Hokkien Mee. I don’t know exactly why. Maybe, no one can make the dry hokkien mee as good as theirs. A regular bowl of the dish (dry or with soup) cost RM3.50. A smaller serving is RM3. You can add other side dishes such as fish ball soup and “bak kut”. The restaurant serves hokkien mee everyday except Monday from 8am to 2.30pm.

This is a new restaurant (open this year) and I decided to give it a try. It is located beside Teow Chew Meng restaurant. The place is comfortably air-conditioned and well lit with rows of marble tables. Even though the restaurant looks like a modern coffee shop a.k.a. Old Town type with free Wifi, but the menu has wide range of food equivalent to a typical Chinese restaurant.

Since the name of the restaurant has the word claypot in it, so I guessed the specialties must be dishes serve in claypot. The captain recommended claypot curry fish head. Since curry fish head is also my favorite, I decided to give it a try. Other than that, we also ordered Lemon Chicken and mix vegetables. The curry is quite decent, even though I have tried better ones else where. I like the lemon chicken because the skin is fried until very crispy.

Overall, the meal is quite satisfactory and serving time is quite fast. The price is also reasonable. It was less than RM50 for 3 persons. It opens daily from 11am to 10.30pm.

Ah Khoon Loh Mee

I’m not so much of a loh mee’s fan. However due to recommendation from a friend, I decided to give it a try. To my delight, it tasted better than I expected. That explain the crowd in the place. I have to wait for few moments before a seat is available. The thick gravy is not overly starchy and it has enough fresh garlic to appease your appetite.

The signature dish of this air-conditioned restaurant is Marmite Chicken. Yes, the sauce is made from Marmite; the thick and dark paste I used to had when I was a child. It is served with fried “man tau” bread; a great combination for the sauce. Other than the Marmite Chicken, it also serves many types of “stand alone” dish such as fried noodle, fried rice, etc. Due to its close proximity with University Science Malaysia, most of the patrons are students from the campus. The price is quite reasonable.

Open daily from 8.30am – 2.30pm, 6.00pm – 9.30pm except on Tuesday.

Lemon Koay Teow Soup

This is a unique variation of koay teow soup. The soup has strong lemon taste and for extra kick, add some chili paste into the soup. It comes with sizable portion of mince pork.
