Ayer Itam Laksa

When I was in Singapore, a nice Singaporean girl asked me where I was from. When I told her that I was from Penang, her first response was… “Ah… Penang Laksaâ€.

It is obvious that the most well known export of Penang is none other than its laksa. Don’t be surprise to see hawker stalls selling Penang Laksa in KL or any other parts in Malaysia or Singapore.

Unlike laksa from other states (there are other types of laksa), Penang laksa is sour because it uses assam in it’s ingredient.

There are a few famous assam laksa stalls in Penang, but my favorite one is at Ayer Itam market. The place may not look hygienic but it is undeniably the best laksa in Penang. The soup is rich with fish meats and the noodle is smooth. For extra taste, request for more shrimp paste.
